White’s Record Brings Wolfpack to Atlantic Coast Conference Semifinals

Tommy White matched and surpassed several milestones Wednesday night. The game at Truist Field let the group to lead NC State to a third-straight spot in the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Championship semifinals.

White hit 3 home runs in the 10th-seeded Wolfpack’s 9-6 win over third-seeded Miami. It brought his season total to 26 which means matching the NCAA freshman record held since 1990 by Georgia Southern’s Todd Greene. Tommy also became NC State’s all-time single-season home run leader. He was breaking the previous record of 25 held by Tracy Woodson (1984) and Turtle Zaun (1988).

Additionally, the new star tied the ACC Championship record with three home runs in a single game. He has now been performed six times. It is including last season by Louisville’s Alex Binelas against Clemson and at Truist Field as well.

Trailing 2-0 in Pool C play, NC State (35-20) earned a spot against Pool B winner Pitt (29-26) on Saturday at 5:00 PM semifinals. The winner of that game will advance to Sunday afternoon’s ACC title game.

Yohandy Morales homered three times in the top of the second inning to offset White’s solo shot in the first half. He staked the Hurricanes for a 4-1 lead. And Maxwell Romero hit a 425-foot solo shot in the top of the fifth inning.

But a show of strength coming from White. A timely hit from LuJames Groover III, 3-for-5, two RBIs and Noah Soles’ fourth home of the season. It  brought the Wolfpack record their second straight tournament win over the top-ranked team.

With the help of starter Logan Whitaker, Bullpen NC State also looked great as Matt Willadsen (5-4) pitched six solid innings. Willadsen limited the Hurricanes to two rounds on four shots and scored eight.

Miami (39-17) threatened in the ninth. The group put two runners up with one out. However, Wolfpack closed Chris Villaman’s door. For his 11th save of the year, they stroke on Edgardo Villegas and Morales.

The Hurricanes wrap up action in this year’s tournament against Wake Forest (39-17-1) on Friday at 3:00 PM. The two teams will then await the opening of the NCAA Tournament selection on Monday afternoon.
