Tornado Warning for Amherst Area and Most of Central Virginia

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Blacksburg issued a tornado warning for parts of Franklin, Henry, Pittsylvania and Bedford counties. At approximately 7:47 AM, NWS issued a tornado watch for the Amherst, Piney River, and Sweet Briar stations until 8:15 AM.

Moving south, there is severe thunderstorm warning with a possible tornado threat. It has been issued for Halifax County, Pittsylvania, the City of Danville, Caswell, NC, and Rockingham, NC until 8:15 AM.

A Tornado Watch is valid until 2 PM for Charlotte, City of Danville, Appomattox Bedford, City of Lynchburg, Amherst, Mecklenburg, Nelson, Campbell, City of Martinsville, Henry, Franklin, Halifax, and Pittsylvania counties.

The NWS said pea-sized hail was possible. Due to this warning, Henry County Public Schools will be closed on Friday due to inclement weather. However, the graduation will still take place at Magna Vista High School on Friday night as scheduled.

Martinsville Schools operates on a one hour delay. The Lynchburg City School said the high school students, who were already in school, were safe. The bus is protected in place at the high school. Elementary and middle schools will have vacancies pending with “STUDENTS MUST BE HOME – DO NOT CALL THE BUS”.

Tornado watches have been issued for parts of the District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia through 2 PM EDT. At 4:25 AM Friday, the NWS issued a tornado watch for Martinsville, Collinsville, and Stanleytown until 5 AM.
